Artist Statement
Ever Since I was young, I always viewed things differently. Nothing is absolute and the world is flexible. As a creative, I chose to fill in the blanks and grow in exciting ways. I consider my style as illustrative, energetic, and expressive; albeit gestural too. Like a rose I grow in experience, skill and life. No matter the twist and turns my only direction is up!
Who Am I?
My name is Demetriaynne Whaley. I was born and raised in the Lowcountry. Charleston SC, is where I’ve been all my life so far. Growing up I take note in the small things around me. Interactions, movement, sights and sounds, I take each moment I live through and channel it into my art.
How did I start and Why?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve been a fan of Anime and Manga. My older brother started drawing first and I got inspiration from him as he’s a role model close to me. Around 2007 when I was 6-7 years old I started drawing and kept going! I love making stories and characters that mean something to others as much as they did me. I also didn’t see many stories with characters that looked like me so I make my own representation and expand into others as much as I can.
Goals
Some of my plans are:
- Teach Myself How to Animate
- Publish a Comic (Web or Otherwise)
- Learn 3D Animation
- Many More!
